Chinese Crocodile Lizards are amazingly unusual! And hold many similarities to another reptile… that’s right, crocodiles! Though their name might be a large clue to what they are, they still have many unique habits and characteristics.
Where do Chinese Crocodile Lizards live?
Chinese Crocodile Lizards are found in Southern China and Northern Vietnam. But more specifically found in or by water. These semi-aquatic critters will rest on branches and other greenery by rivers, ponds and other slow-moving water.
Why do these lizards hang out in the water?
This lizard species mostly hangs out in the water to look for prey. They like to eat insects, tadpoles and small fish. They’re hunting instincts are similar to a crocodile, waiting until the prey gets near and then it attacks. Sometimes they will even be underwater, which they can do for up to 30 minutes before surfacing!
Other times these lizards will go into a state called metabolic pause. Locals call this lizard “the lizard of great sleepiness” due to its stillness for hours on end, sometimes even days. This state is a form of rest, where they will be unresponsive to any surrounding stimuli. They do this to preserve energy especially when temperatures drop.
This species is extremely territorial, typically you will only find one of its kind in an area of water because of it. But more times than not, when put in a conflict situation they will choose flight over fight. If they are caught by a predator it will do whatever it can to get away; violent hissing, biting, and even defecating.
Chinese Crocodile Lizard Hibernation
Besides their metabolic pause, this species of lizard will also hibernate during the cold months. Hibernation happens in November and March due to the waters dropping below 59.9°F. To get through the cold months, they will come together in tree holes and rock crevices for a good warm slumber.
Physical Features and development of a Chinese Crocodile Lizards.
There are some differences between males and females. Typically males will reach up to 16 inches in total length but females are usually smaller. Males, as many other species are more colorful than females. Even getting brighter during their breeding season (July and August).
Females will have anywhere from 2-12 young after a nine-month gestation period. Once the young are born they can almost immediately take care and feed themselves! Helping their survival with being apart of a territorial species.
What is the Chinese Crocodile Lizard’s current status?
Over the past 40 years, the population has been decreasing and is on the endangered species list. This is due to multiple reasons (click here to learn more).
“In 1996, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Lizard Advisory Group established long-term goals: (1) to improve the status and reproduction of rare and endangered lizards in North American collections; (2) to encourage the need and opportunity for captive-breeding programs; (3) to establish a worldwide network of field, zoo and conservation biologists and provide a forum through which this network can communicate. The crocodile lizard was placed in the high priority category to establish sustainable captive populations.” – Association Of Zoos and Aquariums
