Where do Humphead Wrasse live?
Humphead Wrasse is typically found in the Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea to South Africa; and in the Pacific. They are one of the largest fish that live in the coral reefs, swimming along the outer parts during the day and going into caves or below the coral ledges at night.
Unique Features Of The Humphead Wrasse
Humphead Wrasse is very beautiful and interesting looking fish. They have thick lips that will extend out when food is nearby. A bump on their foreheads (which is the feature that gives them their name). Thick black lines as eye pupils. And are full of vibrant colors; blues, greens, purples, and yellows with such intricate details in their scales.
This gorgeous fish is no little guy either, they can grow up to six feet in length and weigh up to 400 pounds! (182 kg)
What Does The Humphead Wrasse Eat?
What Humphead Wrasse eat is one of the reasons they are so important to our planet. Due to their thick lips and strong teeth, they have the unique ability to eat toxic species such as sea hares, boxfish, and crown-of-thorns starfish. Which can be invasive species, that with overpopulation will actually destroy coral reefs.
(They also enjoy eating mollusks, reef fish, sea urchins, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.)
Who Is Helping This Species?
With coral reefs dying at such a quick pace, fish like the Humphead Wrasse is important for us to protect. That is why 50% of the Humphead Wrasse print will be donated to the WWF who is working to stop the exporting of this fish to give them and the coral reefs a better shot.
Humphead Wrasse
The Humphead Wrasse is the perfect example for us to see how interconnected nature really is. And what a beautiful thing that is.
